Bulut, Sabri Gürses, Merve Akbaş, Elif Aka and Özüm Arzık Erzurumlu, Kelimelerin Kıyısında: Türkiye’de Kadın Çevirmenler (A Sea of Words: Women Translators and Interpreters in Turkey) recounts the lives and works of 16 seasoned female translators and interpreters: Halide Edib Adıvar, Sabiha Sertel, Seniha Bedri Göknil, Azra Erhat, Melâhat Togar, Adalet Cimcoz, Mîna Urgan, Güzin Dino, Nihal Yeğinobalı, Gönül Suveren and Gülten Suveren, Tomris Uyar, Pınar Kür, Belgin Dölay, Fatma Artunkal and Zeynep Bekdik. Bound by a very specific topic, the essays display a rich diversity in terms of period and text type: the volume covers both translation and interpreting, high and popular genres, as well as non-fiction texts, within a wide historical perspective that spans from the late Ottoman and early Republican periods to contemporary times. Best categorized as biographies, the texts place the private and professional lives of the translators and interpreters within a social context, also taking into account the dynamics of the publishing industry.
