An Analysis of Adalet Ağaoğlu’s Novel Yazsonu within the Context of Ecological Consciousness and Political Reality

This study examines Adalet Ağaoğlu’s Yazsonu novel through the lens of ecocriticism and principles of deep ecology. Yazsonu focuses on loneliness in society after a military coup, problematizing these issues through a woman’s experiences in a seaside town. The novel locates the individual within interactions with nature, which is open to be affected by the changes in the ecological environment. Hence, it transforms the hierarchical structure between individuals and nature. The reason behind choosing this novel in this study is novel’s ability to represent humans as subjects with equal power to other beings in nature. The aim of this study is to analyze Yazsonu through the interactions of ecological and political realities. By doing so, the relationship between politics, which is the connection of individuals with society, and ecology, which is the main structure of nature, will be understood. Yazsonu focuses on nature’s reactions against individuals’ interferences, and highlights that humans are not the owners of nature but its inhabitants. Hence, it provides the opportunity to compare the ecological order and nature’s purity.
