Subculture and Expressive Arts in Müge İplikçi’s Children and Youth Literature Novels

Abstract

The works of Müge İplikçi, regarded as one of the prolific writers of Turkish literature with her four novels, six short story books, three children books, and two youth literature novels, provide a rich reading experience with their narrative that blend different disciplines such as social sciences, history, art, and storytelling. In Yalancı Şahit, accepted as a problem-oriented youth literature novel and her children’s literature book Kömür Karası Çocuk, major social problems such as migration and crime are explored through the designs in the art of painting and the universal language of music. In this respect the issue of identity is analyzed with respect to the interaction of art and literature. The analysis of these two novels in terms of socialization theories and the concept of subculture necessitates a multidisciplinary reading. This article written to contribute to the sociological readings of children’s and youth litrature criticism will explore the two mentioned novels in line with the concept of subculture. It will also underline the expressive aspect of art in the expression of an individual’s identity.
