Artificial Intelligence Use Policy

Nesir: Journal of Literary Studies recognizes the increasing impact of artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools in scholarly production and adopts a clear policy that observes the ethical, legal, and academic responsibilities regarding their use. In developing this policy, the journal adheres to the principles recommended by COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics), WAME (World Association of Medical Editors), and the JAMA Network.

Author Responsibility and the Role of AI

AI tools (e.g., large language models, generative AI applications, chatbots) can never be listed as authors or co-authors. Academic authorship entails active contribution to the research process, assuming responsibility for the integrity and accuracy of the content, and signing the publication agreement. These responsibilities can only be fulfilled by human authors.

Acceptable Uses of AI

AI-based tools may be used within the following limits:

  • Language editing and writing assistance: Enhancing clarity, grammatical accuracy, and fluency of the text.
  • Literature search and summarization: Supporting the identification of relevant sources (authors must verify accuracy themselves).
  • Data analysis and modeling: Processing, classifying, or visualizing quantitative or qualitative data (usage details must be described in the Method section).
  • Plagiarism and citation checking: Supporting originality screening and formal accuracy in referencing.

Unacceptable Uses of AI

The following uses of AI are not permitted:

  • Allowing AI to independently conduct fundamental scholarly processes such as hypothesis generation, data interpretation, or drawing conclusions.
  • Failing to transparently declare the use of AI.
  • Incorporating AI outputs into the text without verification (especially regarding fabricated references and inaccurate information).

Disclosure Requirement

  • Authors are required to clearly disclose any use of AI tools.
  • This disclosure must be included in the Acknowledgements section and contain the following note:
“In this study, artificial intelligence-supported tools were used to a limited extent within the acceptable boundaries defined in Nesir: Journal of Literary Studies’ Artificial Intelligence Use Policy; all content has been reviewed and approved in its final form by the author(s).”
  • Additionally, the declaration must be confirmed again by marking the relevant checkbox in the manuscript submission system.

Transparency in the Editorial Process

Editors and reviewers must clearly indicate if they have used AI-based tools during assessment. This information will be shared transparently with the relevant authors in the review report. To protect the confidentiality of unpublished content, the journal does not recommend uploading such material to AI tools.
